Q: how do I convert a car to electric?
I have been dealing with engines since I was “Knee high to a grasshopper”, but all this electric crap confuses me, and a friend of mine wants to know how much it would run him to get…

1. a new car (nice power/weight ratio)
2. the batteries
3. and switch everything to electric
*including paying someone to put it all together for him, because he knows very little about cars*

Specs
he wants something close to an alero or pontiac grand am size,
also he wants batteries making a single layer of double stacked batteries in the trunk, some batteries where the spare tire would be, as well as where the gas tank would be located, and a few under the hood….

my question is how much would this run $ wise, and how many miles would it get per charge?

A: I am sure you can add up a list of parts as well as anyone. You also probably know better, how much you could subtract for the salvage unused parts, than many people. And you also know that what one person might charge could be very different from what someone else might charge.

Some people do this for the fun of learning just what is involved. An electric conversion might be done on the cheap for less than $1000 using any one of these three examples: http://ecomodder.com/blog/cheap-diy-electric-car/

Or you could go the premium route. “For a mere $55,000, you can take your $15,000 Scion and have it made into an all-electric with a 100+ mile range per charge.”: http://www.zoomilife.com/2009/01/04/ac-propulsions-ebox-electric-car-conversion/

And you could end up with a vehicle that can do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=369h-SEBXd8 But generally you start with the lightest vehicle possible and tuning for speed is not the same as tuning for economy and mileage. When someone tells me that they get so many miles on a chage it means nothing until I also know how many KWh of battery capacity they have.

Q: what car would be suitable for rallying?
i have 10k, i would like to buy a used car that would be suitable as a daily driver and also for rally (with some light modifications being half cage ect) needs to be suitable for Victorian P plate laws. (must be N/A and not allowed 8 or more cylinders) whats a car with a good power to weight ratio that would be suitable for it?

A: While not being able to comment on the money front the basic specs that would cover your needs are:

1 Max power 125 HP
2 4X4
3 Ground clearance 175mm+
4 Power to weight ratio is not critical for rally
5 Max torque reachable at 4000 rpm.

Q: why do people think your spoiled if you drive a nice Car?
all of my sophmore year of high school i wanted a car..any car i had my lisence, i brang my grades up to b’s and c averages and some a’s..that is really good for me sense i have always had trouble in school and i have adhd. anyhow i even tried getting a job in the summer but due to the economy i couldnt find a job nor could of any of my freinds..know this year my dad gave me his Cadillac Cts V, a beautiful gorgeous car that is i belive amazing engingering. My Dad has a truck for our ranch in the country.. and my mom drives a range rover and we have a old porsche that me and my dad plan to fix up oneday..my dad bought a used 2006 corvette c6 and also has a 1969 ford mustang that we are building up thats his he inerited that car from his dad..and we have a mercedes sl 550

none the less i had to work all year to bring up my grades
i didnt break the law of really anything
i listend helped my parents around the house and had to try to find a job
i even saved up enough money to pay my insurance for the first 7 months

For all my hard work
and i just recently got a job for god sakes it took forever but i got one.. i have been drivning the cts v with its 5.7 liter ls6 supercharged v8 sense christmas. i am know a junior and realize its a really expnsive car at about $ 40,000 to sell it used or a little less.. BUT i do not think i am spolied i try hard in school and i get distracted easily with school work..but when it comes to driving i drive perfectly fine and i love driving, driving for me is a serious mater. i wash my car almost every week or 2 and i never speed. my Dad got a speending ticket 2 weeks after having his corvette. and i havent had any tickets or anything sense i have been driving

SO ITS BS
to call people spolied or say they do not deseve something
i know a few kids at my school who have mustangs. their is a kid with a 69 ford mustang mach 1 with a 7.0 liter 428 cobra jet engine. its easily the fastest car at school next to my car.

but what i do not understand is how people who are jealous can judge and down talk? espically about people they do not know.. I do however understand that some kids at my school with nice cars and crappy cars abuse driving, they speed, they race, they smoke pot during lunch all the time.. i mean I know kids with nice cars who abuse their cars and do not know anything about cars’, car engines or much of anything and it goes the same for kids with crappy cars..this extends both ways

By the way i do none of that
sure i smoke pot but i dont hot box my car all the time and get drunk and drive nor do i allow smoking in my car..and i actually know about my car, its power to weight ratio, its suspensio, its horespower, its torque, its engine its overall bore and stoke. i know cars and cars are a passion for me

A: Probably because a lot of kids parents give them cars with no strings attached.

The deal with my car was that 1) I had to pay my folks back for it 2) all maintenance, gas, insurance, et. c. I had to pay for. I am a more responsible person for that. My sister had no requirements for her to have a car. She is now 22. She had my dads old car and destroyed it, so he bought her a brand new Scion. She does not pay for gas, insurance or a car note, and she has a job making minimum wage at the local Rite Aid, and she never holds a job for more than 6 months or so. When she is finally cut off she will have no sense of responsibility. I know what it is to buy a car and keep it up, so I try to keep mine in one piece! You are very lucky because even though you were unable to find a job your parents know that you are working towards a car, and you’re not going to give up.

Don’t listen to what these other kids are saying. If you are responsible with your vehicle you will have it for many, many years. Take pride in the fact that your parents are teaching you how to be responsible and are willing to help you out–and you get an awesome car out of it!

Q: How many pounds of weight lost are equivalent to a 10Hp gain?
I am looking to maximize power to weight ratio in my car. I am looking to find out what 10 Hp is equal to as far as weight goes? In other words, if my car weighs 2500 pounds and has 130 Hp, it would have the same 0-60 as if it had 140 Hp and weight… how much?

How many pounds would an additional 10Hp take off or be equal to?
I read it in a tuner mag a while ago. It should be the same for any car. Theres a baseline of how much weight is equal to a 10Hp gain. I have been browsing the net for it but havent been able to find it. I dont think its as simple as just dividing, because that would give you a different number for every car.

A: First; the baseline the tuner mags write about would be an average based on power to weight ratios they, or some other entity, have measured. This baseline should be good enough for figuring what your car’s weight loss will gain you in horsepower equivalent.

If you want a more exact measurement; you can start with the formula Tristann used, but most go further:

2500lb/130hp=19.23lb/hp.
You are looking for the weight to horsepower ratio for a 2500 lb vehicle with 10 more horsepower:
2500lb/140hp=17.86lb/hp
So how many pounds must a car with 130 hp weigh in order to have the same weight to power ratio as a 2500 lb car with 140hp?
X(new weight goal)=17.86lb/hp * 130hp
X=2321.8lb
2321.8lb – 2500lb= -178.2lb

You need to remove 178.2 lbs from your car in order for it to accelerate as if it had an engine with 10 more horsepower.

Q: IF i take out my a/c in my 2003 nissan 350z will i see performance?
just wanted to know if my car will be faster will it be noticable and will it be easy to take it out please help me im reducing weight in the car to improve power to weight ratio also taking out stereo and subs and pss seat.

A: It will take quite a bit of weight to notice a significant amount of performance. Generally, every 100lbs removed equals 1/10th of a second quicker on a quarter-mile race.

So 2600lbs stock car, say 16 flat. Remove 100lbs, you may run 15.9.

With the A/C removed, that’s one less ‘motor’ your engine is working to pull. Another quick and easy way to gain a noticeable amount of power is to remove Power Steering.

Good luck!

Q: Car acceleration question.?
what makes a car faster on acceleration? Kw(Power) or N.m(torque)

i know it also has to do with the power to weight ratio, but imagine 2 identical cars having different engines one having a higher power output and one having a higher torque output.

Scientifically it should be the torqe as T = force * perp distance.

Thoughts??

A: To begin, it’s gravely inaccurate to say “faster acceleration”. The term “fast” describes the magnitude of velocity (speed). Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes – a car that is catching up to a “faster” car (i.e. car travelling at a greater speed) would have greater acceleration.

To answer your question, we must examine what the terms power and torque mean.

Power is the rate at which energy is transmitted, in the context of the car engine, high power output would mean that the engine is converting chemical energy (gas) to heat (from the explosions that cause the car to move) at a high rate.

Torque is the amount of angular force. High torque output by an engine would mean that that the engine is applying high “spinning force” on the wheels.

Taking these definitions in mind, we can quickly see that torque is the more accurate determining factor of a car’s acceleration. An engine with incredibly high power could induce pathetic acceleration – nothing in the definition of power requires that the energy transmitted be applied on the wheels. The engine could, for example, give off most of the energy in direct heat. High torque output, on the other hand, represents a greater amount of force applied on the spinning motion. This is clearly the factor that causes acceleration.

Q: motorcycle or car?? which should i try to get?
im a sophomore in high school right now, im 15 and im about 5′6 in height -it is relevent

i was wondering about buying a motorcycle or just driving the suv we have, we have a 2002 izuzu trooper and a 2008 saab 97x aero, but im not getting near that for like 6 years.
i am very much into cars and bikes. since i could talk i was able to name all the cars on the street, and from time to time ill try to identify the cars i see on the highway ( oncoming traffic so its a speed challenge) i usually get all them right.
Anyways i thought that it would be fun to get a motorcycle whenever the law permitted
i think its 18 for maryland. im also a big biking fan i learned to bike when i was 4 ( 2 wheels)
i bike around very fast ( top speed ever would be 30mph) and have come close to being hit a few times ( about 7-8 times) from stupid cars ( jk i love them) i have what you could call a dangerous attraction to speed. i can drive fine its just that i need to work on braking smoothness ( i dont slam on the brakes though) . if i were to settle for the car then i would just be as is and drive the SUV, or the bike.
for the bike i would have to work a couple of summers and star saving up money.
my parents are afraid for me because of the risk involved in biking, my uncle has had a few bikes. they are trying to keep me away i guess.
if i got he bike id prob start with a 500cc or 250cc. but i was also thinking that i should save up for a nice car one im out of college. im only considering a bike because of its size, and power-to-weight ratio, which always beat car. if u read this whole thing thanks,
so what do u think i should do,
1- get a bike
2-stay with that isuzu trooper till after college

A: keep the trooper cause you can have all your friends with you, which is usefull in college and get a motorcycle when you graduate and PAY the insurance!!! So wait till you get a job, and get a 600cc till you get good, the get a 1000cc, but dont get a 250cc because you will get knocked over by the wind when cars pass by, and wait till motorcyycle season when the isnt snow, but wait because insurance is hella exspensive for 20 year olds driving.

Q: In nfs prosreet how can i get my car to do good wheelies? money is no issue?
car-Ford Shelby GT500
stats
power-lvl 3 just above mid traction-lvl 4 and a quater
aero-lvl 4 and 75% all parts up to highest lvls
683 bhp torque 672 ft-ibs redline 6,663 rpm weight 3,729ibs
weight to power ratio 2.48 ibs/hp

A: use the 69 Camaro, at least tier 3 parts, no nos needed, tune it as such
turbo top bar, 3/4 to the right, bottom bar, all the way right, timing, all the way right, rear tires max inflation and as wide as possible, front tires as skinny as possible, do good burnouts, good launchs, and hit your gears half arzzed, and you can do full track wheelies with it, 1338 all day long.
the stang isnt as good, sorry dude…

Q: Im looking to buy a fun car to drive?
I’d like to get a mid 90’s car that is rear wheel drive, manual tranny and can give me at least 25 mpgs. I’m not looking to spend more than 5000. I’m looking for something with just a god power:weight ratio that can still fit 3 passengers and won’t break down on me frequently.
no help. i want rear wheel drive. I know of all the cars you guys mention.

btw I have a camaro. way too heavy and the v8s and the v6’s both get terrible mpgs.

A: Acura Integra meets all your requirements except rwd

but check with your insurance co first, some are charging steep premiums for these cars

Q: Name one scenario (that I haven’t named already) where an import would beat a muscle in a drag?
My scenarios of where an import would beat a muscle:

-Import is highly tuned where muscle is just factory stock
-Import driver is overall a better drag driver than muscle driver
-Muscle car has problems during the race and ultimately just breaks down
-Import is still tuned more than the muscle car is
-Import power/weight ratio is optimized to overpower weight/torque on Muscle

Considering all my scenarios I’ve stated, is there ANY other practical reasons why an import would beat a muscle? Currently I’m a muscle car guy, I use to be into imports, and I only have respect for STi’s, Evo’s, 300ZX’s, basically very limited to some imports in terms of respect. I’m pretty sure though a muscle car could rape your daily honda civic with a basic H/I/E setup without needing to be tuned. Can you prove me wrong?
This is strictly about JDM/KDM imports. EDM is another story.
LOL Tom J, that’s funny but I’m a chevy fan and in the pony lineup Camaros spank Stangs like a newborn baby
Holly: Not true, you can own an import just for economical and practical reasons. However it’s when you try to start tuning it and “attempt to make it faster” is where you’re headed for a life of pain. Personally I like camry and accords especially the V6 because they pack quite a punch.

A: As long as your talking about the real import cars like you said the evo, sti… Civic is a family car I dony care what they say. I’m sorry but I don’t have any respect for those wanna be’s and as far as that goes look at the gtr its a great car and actually beats most american cars. Like I said “ricers” are the ones you don’t like “imports” are the good one. And I drive an evo and pretty much beat most muscle cars in my town…

Q: BMW 318i E46 Good First Car?
My dad wants to buy me a BMW 318i for my first car. I was wondering if you guys have any personal feedback from it. Is it reliable? Is it safe etc.

P.S. Where I live in Australia they are applying a new law that new drives have to not exceed a certain power to weight ratio or else they cant drive a certain car. The BMW meets that expectation.

A: Then thats it!

If you’re a kid out of high school or in college asking this and you are actually asking about reliablity and safety, I’m impressed.

I guess the kids in OZ have their heads on straighter because up here in good ole’ USA, they’d be wanting to bitch the ride up to make it a wanna-be-tuner M3 and think only of superficial lamo stuff to do to the body, headlights and air intake system.

To answer your question directly – yes, perfect car for safety and if you maintain it properly with OEM BMW parts and take it to a BMW specific garage, you’d be in good hands mate!

Q: Ariel has recently announced the new Atom 500 with a 500 bhp V8?
It already has the same power to weight ratio as the Caparo T1 (the fastest street legal car around a track), so I was wondering if one were to supercharge the Atom 500 and fit it with wider tire for more grip, would there be any car which could compete with it?

A: >> so I was wondering if one were to supercharge the Atom 500 and fit it with wider tire for more grip, would there be any car which could compete with it?

There’s a lot more that goes into a high performance car than high horse power. On an episode of Top Gear, a Mitsushibi Evo beat the Ferrari because of superior power distribution. On high speed race, the aerodynamics has much to do with top speed.

===
Having said that, I love the Ariel atom.

good Luck…

Q: What vehicles are easy to do a motor swap to?
I want to buy a car, truck or suv for CHEAP and do a motor swap. I would prefer the motor swap be easy and the vehicle need as little modifications as possible. I don’t want anything custom as I am unable to fabricate parts. I do want a powerful motor but I understand that power to weight ratio is a big factor. I basically just want some ideas on vehicles that have common and easy motor swaps done to them.

A: A fox body mustang is going to be the easiest (1979-2004). Those year mustangs came with anywhere from a 2.3L 4 cyl, 2.3L turbocharged 4cyl, 2.8L V6, 3.8L V6, 289ci (4.7L) V8 (I think), 5.0L (302ci) V8, 4.6L SOHC V8, 4.6L DOHC V8, supercharged 4.6L DOHC V8. Furthermore, you can put a 351W V8, 5.4L SOHC V8, 5.4L DOHC V8, Chevy 350ci V8, 429ci Ford V8, 460ci Ford V8 all without much effort into one. You can even put one of the DOHC 5.0L V8s from the 2011+ Mustang GT’s into them without much trouble, but it’s expensive to get the engine.

A question I’m curious about, is why you want to buy something just to swap the engine. Some of these cars come with the best possible engine available, so there’s no point to swap it. It would be cheaper and easier (not to mention more productive) to just buy that car and be happy with it.

Q: Vauxhal Corsa C 1.2 vs New Vauxhal Astra 1.4?
which is the faster car? considering power to weight ratio etc. videos on you tube suggest a corsa 1.2 can beat a golf 1.6 off the line???

A: You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here – carquotes.fateback.com

Q: help buying fast car?
I have $8000 that I have saved up for a car or truck. Im a teenager so it has to be fast! I really just need some suggestions. It can be any year ranging from 1970-2000. I dont want anything above a 2000 because of insurance and tag costs. Fuel economy isnt a big factor either because I will soon buy a cheap 4banger to do my daily running. It can have really any engine as long as it has a really good power to weight ratio. Thanks!

A: An early ’90s Nissan 300ZX or ‘93-’95 RX-7, if you can find one for that cheap. Both aren’t very fuel economical, but you can try looking for something like an Eclipse GS-X, or a ‘95-’02 Camaro SS or Z28, although I doubt that you’ll find any of these for much less than 10k if it doesn’t have problems or hasn’t been salvaged.
