Q: Would this be a good head unit for my truck?
I have a 2006 Ford F150 XLT Extended Cab and I’m looking at putting in a Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD head unit. I don’t need the GPS and I would use my standard iPod cable for the Direct Control feature. Is this a good unit for my truck and is it something I could install myself? I have no background in electrical so if it doesn’t just plug in and go I will need an installer.
A: If you going to take it somewhere to have it installed find one you like and have them put it in. Most are build about the same with the only exception really being single/double din types.
Find one with the right features for you, that has at least 50×4 and youll be okay.
Q: what do you recommend as a good head unit/ CD receiver?
im looking for a new head unit / CD receiver to replace my old one, looking for something that can provide with me good sound quality, usb plug for iPods, etc. not looking to pay too much on it, so far im looking at brands such as pioneer and sony and clarion. but which models do you recommend as a good affordable one
A: Personally im a fan of alpine and own their CDA-9887 which can be found on ebay for pretty cheap
Take a look at their line

Q: What is a good head unit to get for my ‘08 mustang gt?
I’m looking to upgrade my sound system over time, and want to start with a really decent head unit. suggestions?
alright thanks mxcrazy123! and
what do you think of the Alpine iDA-X100? is the CDA 9886 better?
A: Sorry that both those answers sucked.
Good single DIN aftermarket head units:
Alpine CDA 9884, CDA 9886, CDA 9887, F-1 status.
Eclipse CD 7200 mkII, CD7100, CD 5000, CD 7000
Nakamichi 300, 400, 500
Pioneer 880prs
Kenwood Excelon
Nakamichi will deliver the best sound quality but has many mechanical and build issues. They also lack features. The next best thing for sound quality will be the higher end Eclipse decks. I have owned the CD 4000 and have auditioned their new line up that includes their highest CD 7200 mkII. Well the new line up and the old lineup have some of the worst usabilty problems. The newer decks have big and stiff volume knobs. Weird buttons to access everything from. I have heard good things about the Pioneer 880, but for the price you can get something with more features and better sq. I have also auditioned Alpines newest lineup. The CDA 9887 is a nice unit but cost over $100 more than the 9886. The only difference between the two is the built in imprint sound which I have not heard any great things about. Alpine definitely wins the usability and looks department. If I had $350 to spend right now on a new unit, my choice would go to the Alpine CDA 9886.
Hope this helped.
Q: Question about car stereos. Is this a good match or should I look for a better head-unit?
I just bought new Pioneer speakers that are:
280w peak
50w RMS
93db sensitivity
30 Hz – 33 kHz frequency response
I’m looking at a Dual head-unit that is
220w peak (55×4)
17 RMS
80db signal to noise ratio
10hz-20khz frequency response.
A: I would look for a better head unit, DUAL is not really a good brand at all, I would go for a newer Pioneer model…they are really good and fairly cheap. . .the peak power is nothing, what you are looking for is watts rms. . .
Q: Where can i find a good head unit/ radio for my 03 350z?
Websites please im trying to upgrade from stock and i want one thats is good.
A: http://www.xplodsony.com/
http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/home/
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/
All those have good ones if you want it to sound great get a signal processor like the 360 from Fosgate but if your on a budget i’ve had two sony headunits and they’re pretty good, i’d get one with aux input but i’m not sure unless you get the base unit i think they all have that
Q: What to look for in a good head unit?
I only want to spend about 150. I went to besy buy the other day, I saw many sonys, kenwoods, Poineers for around 110-130.
But other than that, what do I look for? I want to get a sub as well. I will have my stock speakers. I also want mp3 CD
what does all the watts mean, crossovers, and ect that really means somthing
$150 on Head Unit, not on Sub and all
A: To find a decent head unit, I would not go to Best Buy. They only stock a) the most popular b) the cheapest. When I look at a CD player, I look at the RCA out (how many volts is it) 3- 5 volts is usually good. Don’t look at the watts on the front of the face (it is just a made up number most of the time). Look at the warranty that is offered. Also, compare it to other cd players in the same price range and see if the face looks cheaper. Most of the time if a cd player looks cheaply made, it probably is.
Q: im looking for a good head unit for sound and really loud?
PIONEER,KENWOOD,JVC,ALPINE and mayb DUAL and SONY. which one would you recommend for me for sound quality and loudness
A: Installing a head unit will increase the loudness of your current set up. You will also run the risk of blowing your current factory speakers. If you’re looking for a better sound quality, and you cannot afford to do it all at once, I would start by replacing the factory speakers, then move onto replacing the factory radio. The majority of aftermarket head units will all push out between 17 watts rms up to around 22 watts rms. I would definitely stay away from Sony, JVC, and Dual. My personal preference is Kenwood, but Pioneer and Alpine are far more popular. Between the three brands I’d take a look at what features you need in a head unit whether it’s bluetooth capability, satellite radio, iPod, and etc. If after you upgrade the radio and speakers, and the sound is not loud enough you can look into adding a four channel amplifier to increase the loudness of the speakers.
Q: What is a good quality head unit for under 150 dollars?

Q: need a good head unit for my car?
need a good head unit for my car i can only spare bout $150 any1 know where i can get on with free postage?
A: Blaupunkt London MP-48 at Sonic Electronix. Comes with harness, kit, and antenna adapter all for under $100. Nice unit.
Q: What is a good single din touch screen head unit?
What is a good single din head unit? im looking for touch screen for ease of use.
I am running an external hard drive under the passenger seat, to the head unit. and sorting its folder structure like this artist>album>songs
So what would be the easiest to navigate through the music? under 900 please.
A: Are you looking for something that has a mechanical screen that comes out? I’m not a big fan of those because not only are they tacky, but they’re fragil and often block heater vents. I’ve had, and I’ve installed many different brands of stereos but what’s been catching my eye lately are the Alpine head units.
Now this doesn’t have a touch screen but I think you’ll be much more impressed with this unit (touch screen has a lot of downsides, I have one)…
http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ida-x305s
This unit has USB hook-up for your external drive and it is structured exactly how you want. It also has iPod hook ups and if you have an iPhone you can listen to Pandora Radio through it while you drive with a very easy to use screen. The USB and iPod hookups are both very very fast to load. The best part, this retails for only $400. With that price you can buy accessories for it like HD radio.
The downside, it doesn’t play videos.
another option…buy a double din and find a way to make it fit in a single din opening, that’s what I did with my 93 suburban and then my 96 tahoe
Q: What is a good head unit to go with 2 12” mtxjackhammer subs?
A: you can consider buying this

Q: how to telll if a head unit is good?
how can i tell if a radio head unit is good if its not in a vehicle is there anyway with out putting it in a vehicle?
wouldnt that burn it up with out a fuse?
A: find an old working speaker and a car battery. put your red and yellow wire on the positive and the black to the negative after you wire up wine of the speaker outputs. if it turns on then continue to test all the other speaker outputs. dont forget to check the CD!
Q: i was wondering what a good head unit would be?
i have a crappy kenwood atm but i need a head unit that i can hook up 4 subs too that looks good but isnt gonna break my bank.
A: some people might hate on it but for headunits im a sony guy.
stay away from the cheap sony though they are garbage. spend around 200 on a sony head unit and im sure you will be satisfied. ive fell in love with the ease of use and the sound of the sonys.
just pony up some money and dont buy a bottom of the line one and i think it will work out for you.
the last 200 dolla sony i had, had 4 sub outputs a 10 band eq, HP and LP filters. and a couple other goodies
overall it had everything needed to cater to my sound and the color changing and all that was just a plus
=)
Q: Invest on a good head unit or invest on a good separates(focal)?
I don’t have that much budget. head unit or separates?
A: “There is no way on Earth that a head unit or separates can be considered an investment. First realize that you are blowing money on it because you like it, and stop trying to make it sound like you are getting your money back with interest or something.”
BH and ronin: There is more than one way to define an investment other than in the financial sense like investing in a mining company or putting your money in a term deposit. It is also an investment when you buy something where its usefulness will repay the cost.
Boss314 decided it was an investment because he knew that his money spent will provide a long-term benefit for him, so to him and most, if not all, audio enthusiasts it IS an investment and virtually risk free.
To answer your question boss I would definitely upgrade your speakers before getting a new head-unit, and the brand Focal has some of the best sounding speakers I have had the pleasure of listening to. In particular have a look into the “K2 Power” series. Go for the separates, the head-unit can wait.
Ben
