Q: what do i need to build fiberglass sub box?
what do i need to build fiberglass sub box and what are the steps thanks
A: You need: Fiberglass resin, fiberglass cloth and/or fiberglass mat, MDF, paint brushes (to spread fiberglass), and bondo.
-First, you need to have a base usually made out of MDF. You also need to mount rings made out of MDF that are cut out to hold the sub in.
-Next, you want to get some fiberglass cloth and make the basic shape of the enclosure. You can use foam and many other methods in order to get the shape you want also.
-Next, you need to put resin on the fiberglass cloth and wait til it dries.
-Lightly sand the cloth so there is no sharp edges and make sure the shape is correct.
-Now that you have the correct shape and a layer of fiberglass you need to add more layers. I usually use fiberglass mat after i have the shape. It uses a ton of resin but it makes for a strong finish.
-Keep adding layers until your enclosure is strong.
-Sand until the shape is correct and fiberglass is smooth.
-Use bondo or some other body filler to make a smooth finish. This step requires A LOT of sanding. You will need to bondo a couple of times until the shape is good and the enclosure is smooth enough.
-Finally, add your finish to the enclosure.
This is just a basic explanation, there is other small steps that i may have left out. Good Luck!!!!
Q: I am interested in building a fiberglass sub box, how hard would you say it is?
i am doing this for my sister’s new car and i am some knowledge of making a box, i work in the auto industry, and have done carpentry work also. Just so you know i am not a total dumb @#*, asking how hard something is. But i can get all the fiberglass resin and cloth for cheap so i all ready think it will be a few try’s but i am more conserned about how the paint works, or i mean getting the nice clear gloss look?
thanx if you have any input
A: Well my friend, what i do know about fiberglass is that if not done well, it will have a tendency to warp. This is specially true for sub boxes since they are subjected to regular amounts of heat (dissipated from both the sub and amp if it is near) and also a lot of vibrations. Painting wouldn’t be too much of a problem so long as you are patient and let the mold dry before really working on it.
Also, I would suggest you get someone to look into your enclosure and check to see if you created something that not only looks nice but sounds great as well.
If you have skill with carpentry, why don’t you build the box out of wood and just jazz it up with some fiberglass moldings or something? That way you still get the best sound out of your subs plus the aesthetic look of the fiberglass. Hope I was of help.
Q: I’m looking into building a Fiberglass sub box?
I have worked alot with wood, but never with fiberglass. What type of tools do i need? and what types of things i need to buy to build it?
A: It just so happens that I just got done building mine…
You’re going to need A LOT of fiberglass. It’s only a fraction of a millimeter thick, so you’ll need lots of layers. A bigger sub with more power equals more and more layers.
You’ll need fiberglass resin.
You’ll need MDF to build the skeleton and base.
You’ll need some sort of stretchy cloth to stretch over the top for your shape.
You’ll need lots of sand paper.
Paintbrushes
Body filler to give the outside a smooth look
It is a VERY long process. I spent about 40 hours in my box by the time I was done. That was also $350 later… Take my advice, just get an MDF box.
If you’re set on fiberglass take a look at this site. It tells you what to do.

Q: Building a fiberglass sub box?
I am building fiberglass subwoofer box and i am just wondering if i need wood? I am making a mold out of card board, and i am wondering if i could just simply cover the cardboard with fiberglass? Would it be strong enough to handle the intense thump of a 15 inch type R?
A: I would recommend building at least the baffle and support structure/base out of wood. Connect the Baffle plate to the base directly with supports. Make the port(if not running sealed) out of wood or tube. Leave the complex curves to the glass. I have found that not only will your strength improve, but so will the tonality. Make sure any area that is glass is at least 1/2″ thick in build layers. The Type-R 15″ is a serious driver capable of serious Xmax and overall output. Make sure to take this into consideration.
Q: WHICH FIBERGLASS SUB BOX IS BETTER? VENTED OR SEALED?
I HAVE 2 12″ ALMANI SUBS. 1600 WATTS EACH. AND A HIFONICS BRUTUS AMP. I HAVE A CHRYSLER ASPEN 08. SUV. IM GOING TO MAKE A FIBERGLASS SUBWOOFER BOX,
I WANT THE TYPE OF BASS WHERE I CAN FEEL IT OUTSIDE OF THE CAR, AND PEOPLE KNOW IM COMING AROUND THE BLOCK. THAT DEEP CLEAN BASS.
WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE THINK IS BETTER? I NEED THE HELP.
VENTED OR PORTED?
THANKS
A: If you want a nice, clean bass. id go with the sealed (you can get better sound quality). If you want to get aggressive bass and the most out of you set up the go with the Vented. Make sure you know required cubic feet that your subs need. (that’s always the hardest part). i hope that help.
Q: Building a fiberglass sub box.. Can I use particle board instead of MDF??
Nearsest MDF is about 30mi away.. I was wondering if I could use particle board instead and if so what the major differences would be…
A: Particle board tends to not do so well as far as holding up to the weight of subwoofers and it also has too much flex that you will definately hear.
But, for last ditch effort….
Here are some tips http://spkrbox1.spaces.live.com
Q: A friend told me I should fiberglass risen my sub box, will it make a difference?
They said to fiberglass risen the inside of the box of optuim performance
A: If your gonna paint it, then yes. Performance wise, doubt any difference but it will look better
Q: wath kind of fiberglass do i need to make a sub box??
i want to build a sub box but with fiberglass and i dont know exacly wat i need or where to get it. if you know well….tell me and if you have a couple advices for me well i would aprechiate…..i suck at righting
A: To list a few items…
- Fiberglass resin
- Fiberglass mat/cloth
- Paint brushes
- Lot of sandpaper
- Body filler if going to paint
- 3/4″ MDF for basic parts, shape
- Light weigth fleece to get shape
- Staple gun
- Gloves
- Mixing pan
I’m sure there is more you are going to need but that is the major items. You can get most of these items at a local hardware store. Walmart even has some fiberglass resin and mat. You can probably look up for a store that sells fiberglass materials in your area and get a better kind though. You can get the lightweight fleece at a local fabric store. The body filler can be found again at Walmart or at a auto parts store.
You are going to have to put a lot of work and time into making a nice fiberglass enclosure. You are going to have to spend a lot of time and money but in the end it is worth it. Especially if you get it painted.
Good Luck!!!

Q: Fiberglass a sub box.?
Well folks, it’s time I put my Kicker 12″ L5 in my ext cab truck. This is the ONLY way that sub is gonna fit under the back seat properly.
I’ve read some online forums and such….deciding that 7 square meters of matting and 32oz of resin should be enough. Think I’ll need any more?
A: Can’t tell for sure if that will be enough. Best way is to start out with what you think you’ll need, and if you need more, you can just pick up a little more (or if you plan on fiberglassing in the future, you could invest in a large quantity).
Just make sure that, for straight flat parts, use MDF. You can glass over the MDF if you want, but the curved/non-flat surfaces should be the only ones that are solely fiberglass. Also make sure you do, at the very least, 3 layers of quality matting. Glassing is fun, make a day of it.
Q: would u get your fiberglass custom box done here?
http://cgi.ebay.com/HIGH-QUALITY-FIBERGLASS-SUB-BOXES-OR-DASHES-FOR-ANY-CAR_W0QQitemZ290127428754QQihZ019QQcategoryZ50565QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
would u get your fiberglass custom box done by them? they do it for any car .. but i dont know how much shipping is .
A: Get a quote from them. and then see how much it would be to make it your self. you can see in my little pic that I made my own box. it was the second piece that I had made my it looks great and sounds great. and it only cost me about 200 with out the subs. if you have the tools and the time you can do it, but yea I would have them make one for me
Q: Where can I have a custom fiberglass box made for my subs that takes up my entire trunk? How much does it cost
I have two 12 inch Alpine type x subs. 1 JL amp, working on two. How and/or where do I get a custom fiberglass box made for my 2001 olds intrigue trunk? How much does this usually cost?
A: It all depends on how detailed you want it to be. Please understand that this process includes tons of sanding and harmful chemicals for the installer. You are looking at about $65 dollars an hour and it usually takes about 24 hours. Since you have Alpine subs you might wanna go in to their web site and look for authorized dealers around your area they have a dealer locator. Also check out this website. WWW.SOLUTIONSFORSOUND.COM
Q: Where can I learn to work with fiberglass?

Q: Sub box interior volume measurement question.?
I am learning to do fiberglass sub boxes right now and I want to know what the best way to measure the interior volume of a box that is not anywhere near square in shape is?
I’m learning to do fiberglass sub boxes and I want to know how to figure out how much air space is inside a fiberglass box that has many differant rounded shapes and curves to it?
A: The eaiset way i have found is getting rice puffs or small bits of styrofoam, and fill the whole box completly, then taking out all the material used to fill the box and put it in a measuring cup in cubic inches. Its the only way we could figure out our cubic inch of airspace with custom fiberglass boxes. If its too much airspace, simply add 2 by 4 scrap and fiberglass it in place till you get your desired airspace needed for your subwoofer.
Q: Summer project sub box company.?
I want to have a summer project making fiberglass sub boxes for people this summer as an “after work” project to make some more cash.
I would like to have a name that is like hidden killer or something (except I can’t use stealth….and don’t want ninja). Any ideas?
A: How about box thumper.
