Q: We have a 2003 Jeep Liberty Limited and the Ignition locked up..key will only go in half way. What do we do?
We can only get the key in half way. It’s totally locked up. The dealer says that ignitions get old…lol. What a joke! Anyhow, do I get a new ignition or is there something else we can do? Before we had this happen, we had a hard time every once in a while getting the key out of the ignition.
A: Bent tumbler. Locksmith time. We prefer cash. Seriously, the DIY suggestions can’t hurt the lock, but probably won’t work if my suspicion is correct. Whatever you do, DON’T HIT THE KEY trying to free the tumbler. That key costs more than the lock and impact can damage the chip in the head. Plus, if you miss and fracture the antennae, you’ll need a platinum credit card.

A: Update- Does that mean that the steering column isn’t locked?
Is the ignition switch locked up or the ignition lock cylinder?
Try rocking the steering wheel back and forth slowly while you turn the key. If the steering wheel gets turned a little while the ignition switch is off the steering wheel will “lock” and may make the key very hard to turn. If you turn the wheel in the direction the wheels are angled it should allow you to turn the key.
Q: my ignition is locked up, how do i start my car?
my ignition will not turn it is stuck in lock position. i have already experienced the key getting stuck and not releasing, that was a transmission relay. its been fixed this is not the same deal. this time the ignition just will not turn and the steering wheel is locked as well as the igniton. i need to start the car. what do i do for a temporary fix? without hot wiring? i thought about crossing the starter to get it to start. if i do this will the steering wheel unlock? or will i be stuck with a running car that wont move? also i am not sure where the starter is if it will work.
ok you people are not paying attention to the question. my car is off. my car is in park. my car is not a foreign car. and of course ive tried jiggling and wiggling the ignition and steering wheel. now would somebody please give me a good suggestion and not a bad one like put the car in park. this question was intended for somebody who knows about cars, not for somebody who is trying to get points.
97 gmc jimmy automatic. 4×4 fully loaded.
A: THIS HAPPENED TO ME on my 83 toyota celica. i ended up haveing to hot wire it as a temperary fix. i dont know how old your car is..but here is what happened to mine. there were little pins in the key switch mechanism that were wearing out..the small amounts of “metalic dust” eventually clogged these pins so that they were hard to move. they are normally spring loaded but eventually they had a hard time moving…i had to wiggle and jiggle the key at first…but it eventually got so bad that it wouldnt work. it was like the key i had wasnt made for that ignition switch anymore. anyway, i went to the wrecking yard…got a new switch and new door locks (so i could keep only one key for everything). i hope this helps…if it doesnt…you might tell specificly what kind and year of car it is. ALSO, that WD40 idea that was already mensioned is what i did for about a week till it just got too bad.
Q: Help, my Ignition locked up?
I have a 99 Chrysler Concorde lxi 3.2 v6. My child was playing with the key in the ignition with the car off and it seemed to lock everything up. The security alarm works but the steering wheel, gear shift, brakes, etc. are completely locked up. We have tried moving the wheel to get it unlocked but no success. Any ideas?
A: You didn’t say if the key is still stuck in the ignition.
Regardless, my locksmith confided to me his secret weapon, Remington Gun Oil with Teflon. You can buy it at Walmart in the sporting good dept.
Spray it into the lock cylinder on the column, and work the key back and forth repeatedly. If that fails, a locksmith will have to go into the column.
Q: Locked up ignition switch?
Can anyone tell me how to fix a locked up ignition switch? Do I have to replace it, or is there something else I can try? If I have to replace it, what will it cost me?
A: Graphite works well, if that doesn’t work use liquid wrench, WD-40 is too light of an oil to loosen up things like this.
Q: ignition locked up, cant turn key?
ignition locked up, cant turn key
A: * Try moving the steering wheel side to side, as you try to turn key
* That happens sometimes.
* moving steering when will free ignition key to turn again, often.
Q: my 1998 dodge caravan ignition locked up on me. no matter how hard i try the key will not turn the ignition?
i drove to the store turn the car off. but when i put the key back into the ignition it would not turn no matter how hard i try
A: i was gonna say the same as the first guy, shake your wheel a little when you try to turn it. If it breaks free then put some lubricant into the lock.
Q: Ignition locked up on 2002 Ford Explorer?
Have allready turned steering wheel back and forth, moved shifter to make sure it’s in park. WD 40 the inside of ignition switch, rocked it back and forth and the key will still not turn either way in the ignition either to start or back to acessory………HELP!!!!!!!
A: you didn’t mention if you try your spare key
so the key is on off now ,,keep trying ,and the moment it turn to on replace the key cylinder right away,, don’t turn it back to off
the reason is key cylinder will only come off when it is on the on position,,or else you will spend a lot of money
Q: i have a 1999 pontiac grand am se, and the ignition locked up on it, can anyone help?
i bought the car and i had a new engine put into it because the old one wouldnt start and the ignition locked up on it so i had to break it out, then i took it to a mechanic and he fixed it and it ran, i could drive it to my house right up the road, but then as i went to start it again the ignition locked up and i was screwed, now i just wanna know is POSSIABLE that its a cowinsodent that they both locked up or can there acctually be something wrong for them both to lock up
A: you have to pull the ign switch out and drill out the lock cly
best left to a dealer or you will cause more work and parts that will have to be replaced
Q: In my 95′ camaro its security light has been popping on and locked my ignition up so it wont start.?
Could it be related to my keyless entry system. When pushing the remote button lock button and trunk button doest work half the time.
A: Yes, you have a broken wire at the lock cylinder for the VATS system. The way to check this is with a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) Measure the resistance of the key resistor pellet at the base of the ignition key. Next, find the two-wire harness coming from the Ignition Lock Cylinder at the base of the steering column. Insert the key in the Ignition Lock Cylinder and check the resistance at the base of the column. It should be the same as the key. Watch the ohmmeter while turning the key all the way to crank position and back to off several times. If the reading is open or it varies, the Ignition Lock Cylinder is faulty. Replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Bring the old key to a dealer to have it matched to a new key. There are different resistor pellets available and the key and lock cylinder pellets must remain the same value.
Q: 98 Pontiac ignition locked up?
So yeah, I can’t turn the key when I put it in the ignition what so ever. I have had this happen before a few months ago but after wiggling the key I got it to turn properly. This obviously isn’t working anymore. Anyone have any suggestions?
A: turn the steering wheel while you turn the key
Q: Ignition locked up on oldsmobile?
When I tried to start my 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva the key wouldn’t turn and the steering wheel locked. How can I get it unstuck?
A: take and turn the wheel real hard left while trying to turn the key and if it does not work left the do it to the right. It is just bound up on the lock and also try jerking the wheel left to right this works most of the time.
Q: Ignition lock question. Key would only go in halfway steering wheel was locked. Tore ignition lock up?
To unlock the steering wheel. So now use a pair of pliers and grab and push down on a wire on top of the steering column to start the van Ford 1989 Econoline Van. Anyways tags expired need safety inspection to get tags renewed. Can just the ignition lock be changed even though its thrashed like the area where the key went. Or do i need a whole new steering column, with new steering wheel, and ignition lock ? Thanks in advance
A: you would need shift rod but auto wreckers get new colum cheap 70$ easy to install but for safety inspection shouldnot matter unless out of province
