Q: How do I start to become a car salesman?
My husband just signed up as one and not sure if it’s 1099 or W2 based. If there are benefits or we are going to be out in the cold with this. The place says they pay Salary and Commission but how long before he actually sells a car after training? Were in Ohio does he need a license and who pays for it? Thanks
I just want to know if it is 1099 based or W-2 based and if there are benefits. Not really interested in personal stories.

A: A proffesional car salesman doesn’t need to lie to make money, nor the gift of gab. In actuality talking to much can screw up a car deal. You dont have to be smooth, good looking, charismatic, or charming. Its a really easy business. You just have to focus on the steps of the sale. If you follow the steps the same way every time you will have a better chance of closing the deal. Staying focused, listening, and being organized are very important. Its a great business and career. Profit is not an evil word. A great deal is in the eye of the beholder..hold true to that and a person will sell many cars and make tons of money while maintaining honesty and respect from his/her customers.

It should be W2. Usually how it works is a salesperson is paid commmission or minimum wage…whatever is greater. plus salary sometimes and bonus. If you stay focused in this business you can make 10k plus a month consistently!

Q: How can I become a phony car salesman?
I think car salesmen are cool, and I want to become a phony car salesman when I grow up. What kind of degrees or internships do I need to get a job at a dealership and sell phony cars at a high price?? Should I major in marketing?

A: You sound exactly like a true professional car salesman already -

You really should major in “Lies & Deceit” and minor in “Dishonesty” these would
work fine.

Q: how do i become a car salesman?
i am just thinking of a future career, and i want to become a car salesman. i have thought about the drawbacks and found that there are more positives than negatives. do you have any ideas of where to start from or what qualifications i would need? thanks

A: You start by signing a blood contract with Satan.
Then, you have to figure out ways to con people into things they don’t need.
Lastly, you need to feel ok with yourself acting like someone’s best friend and then ignoring them after the paperwork is signed.

Ok, I am exaggerating, but there are too many jerk car dealers that makes buying cars unenjoyable.

The auto industry is a mess. I would focus on a different career if I were you.

Q: how to become a car salesman?
How can i get this job and what do i need? do i need highschool? college? a special program?

A: I have been at this a long long time – as many know from reading my responses.

This is not a job for the faint of heart. First off, it is comission only. I like that, because performers are rewarded in ratio to their success. So if you have the drive, and the work ethic, you stand to make a decent living. It’s not a safe cushy salaried job. So if you need that, then stop reading here and move on to another topic.

There are a LOT of us who work very hard for our customers. We work to give them the best experience possible. We listen. We get to know what they want and need. We know their parameters and get them the perfect vehicle that is in their budget. ANd our customers love us. But no matter how hard you try, no matter how good and sincere you are, there are many who will dislike you before they meet you. Our profession got a black eye a long time ago, and people will not forget that. Read this forum – we are called crooks, cheats, swindlers, and motherless goats. You can have the pope for a desk man and a cardinal for a closer, and those people will still distrust you.

But, if you want to learn sales skills, there is no better training ground. The skills I learned in the car business were better than any training I have ever had, and that includes training seminars I have given. I have worked for three Fortune 500 companies – 2 were Fortune 100, and still the car business is what made me successful in them.

It gets in your blood though. I have been in the business, left and come back. A few times.

You work long hours, nights, weekends. You have to be there when its busy, so you can make sales. You have to be there when its slow, because you might otherwise miss that one customer of the day.

It can be the highest paying, hardest job that you love – or the lowest paying easy job you hate. Its all about what you put into it.

So – you have to decide. If that scares you or you think that you don’t have the drive to put in the sweat to build a clientele, then dont even fill out the application.

Watch this video. If you think you can take this kind of sales meeting – jump in the water. (caution adult language)

What do you need? A good personality, enough brains to know when to shut up, and when to talk. Ability to listen listen listen. You have to know your customers in order to be successful.

Q: I just finished school and want to become a car salesman.?

Q: what qualifications do i need to be a car salesman?
im in Yr 9 an im pickin my options an id like to become a car salesman. any1 got any info how much is the average they get payed a year an wt qualifications i’ll need. cheers :]

A: Have a charisma bypass, forget about brushing your teeth, eat garlic, use a clip on tie, go clubbing a lot, so you stink of stale ale and get a beer-belly, and never polish your shoes. Call all the women “love”, and all the blokes “mate”, and you’re well away. Never learn to add up either. You’ll make a fortune.

Q: if I become a car salesman how much money can I expect to earn, on average, I know it varies, but on average.?

Q: Need help!! how can i become a better car salesman?
I just started to work in a used car dealership about 3 months ago I don’t have much experience with sales but I like to interact with people and I think Im making ok money in the car business. However lately I’ve had the problem where I cant bring the people into the dealership to start working on the numbers. How can I overcome this?? all my customers seems to just tell me “let me keep looking and I’ll come back tomorrow or some other time” WHY??

A: Agreed that the market sucks, which makes it a buyers marktet, but know about the cars your selling, and know what other places are selling them for. I went to a dealership and they were asking 4k more than another one, I told them this because I did my research, so they took 3k off and gave me a better interest rate than the other. Many used car dealerships are going south because nobody wants to buy a new car, most don’t have the financial security to do it, though looking for a great deal is always fun, explain to them things like “What your spending in a monthly payment, you’re going to make up for in gas saved with better MPG and comfort” You’ve got to get their attention, don’t convince them that they just want this newer or better car, convince them they NEED it like they need air. Its hard to do, so be as sincere as possible, as happy and easygoing as possible, and always give ema card, adn hope they remember you. Just remember that the customer will remember you, even if you don’t remember them, so don’t come across pushy, but don’t come across as though you don’t give two pennies what they want either…

Q: How do I become a car dealer?
I’m in College at the moment and really can’t stand it, and basically would value any information on how to go about getting a job as a car salesman a.s.a.p, however I do not want to do apprenticeships. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

A: Car salesman just requires a go-get-um attitude and the ability to “sell yourself” to the guy doing the hiring and the buying public, a willingness to work long hours for commission only and not complain about “minimum wage”.

Becoming a dealer requires a good bit of capital that you probably don’t have.

Q: How do I become a great car salesman?
I am trying to get a job as a car salesman at a high end used car dealership. I went for 2 interviews and was told that I wasn’t being hired right then. He gave a me a sharpie marker and asked me to sell it to him. He said I didn’t know how to sell myself. And I just wasn’t top sales man material. But he said he liked me a lot and I am ex military(he really likes that). He liked the way I dressed and my personality, but he said I didn’t know how to act (which he says its all acting). Also told me to practice and come back for another interview when I am confident enough. Can anyone give some ideas on how to be a good car salesman? thank you

A: Ive been through this schtick a few times. This is an old technique that has been around since the Studebaker era. Here is how I suggest handling it

“OK sell me this sharpie”

“Before I sell you the sharpie, I’d like to ask you a few questions…”

Why do you need it
How will you use it
Have you ever had one before
what did you like about it
will you be the only one using it
what features are important to you

ask a few others

Then when you are done asking questions, make the presentation

This sharpie has… you said you liked that. It can…. which is what you told me y ou were looking for.

This sharpie will—- Isnt that amazing?

etc etc

Then

Based on what you told me you were looking for, (name a couple of features), I th ink we have found the ideal Sharpie for you, wouldnt you agree? Great, let’s get some paperwork filled out and you and your brand new sharpie can be on your way…

Tada

Remember F.A.B = Featuer Advantage Benefit

This sharpie has (feature). No other sharpie has that (advantage). the benefit to you is., you can (benefit).

Qualify (questions), Present, Close (always ask for the sale)

“Confessions of a Car Salesman

What really goes on in the back rooms of car dealerships across America?

What does the car salesman do when he leaves you sitting in a sales office and goes to talk with his boss?

What are the tricks salespeople use to increase their profit and how can consumers protect themselves from overpaying?

These were the questions we, the editors at Edmunds.com, wanted to answer for our readers. But how could they really know that our information was accurate and up-to-date? Finally, we came up with the idea of hiring an investigative reporter to work in the industry and experience, firsthand, the life of a car salesman. “

Q: How old do you have to be to be a car salesmen?
Hi, i live in the state of NEW JERSEY..how old do you have to be, to become a car salesmen? does it vary from dealer to dealer?

A: 18. individual dealers may have their own policy.

Q: Car Salesman?
I am a junior in high school with average grades. Im thinking about becoming a car salesman as a future career. I’m going to be going to college (not sure where yet) and I live in Wisconsin. I’ve been taking a lot of marketing classes in high school, and this semester im in a retail marketing class, which is how ive become interested in a selling career. We just had a sales demonstaration where we presented a product to a sales person and they grade us on how well we do, and I scored a 174/180 points. I know a lot about different cars and I was wondering if this would be the right career for me, and if it’s a good career to pursue. If so, what recommendations would you make for me for college? I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight, and I’d really appreciate it if someone who does this for a living could help me out and let me know. Like I said, I make average grades right now in my junior year of hs. Thanks.

A: I do this for a living well that and collect on accounts so I can tell you on my end what it takes. No college is going to teach you how to relate and talk to people. No college is going to give you the skills that you need to make 100k a year in the car sales business. You learn that solely through experience and sucess and failure with customers.Whoever said steering the customer in the right direction was halfway right. Its true some people dream of cars that they can’t afford but guess what its not your option or choice to tell them what they do and don’t like if they want a BMW and have the credit then by all means put them in it and wave as they go out the door.Would they come back to you in three months and say man I am sure glad you didn’t put me in that van I really need …no its ego.Half the time people’s expectations and what is actually there is two different things.People expect you to steer them in the right direction of closing the deal. They come in tired of looking and you need to close them on what you’ll learn any good salesman would say …this is what you owe down and this is what your monthly payment will be and how about sign on the dotted line and will go ahead and get the car ready for you.Do not think this is all fun and games sometimes you’ll know “gosh that person doesn’t really need that” but you don’t make 100k a year with your thoughts and personal feelings on the line.If a person’s credit doesn’t reflect that new shiny sports car say hey lets go take a look at this never say to them “man I can’t put you in something just led them into what they can afford” a FICO of less than stellar isn’t going to land a new beamer in their future anyway but show them the car and when your Finance mangager says well they can’t buy that and laughs at you then show them that van or whatever but never sway on your attitude about selling them SOMETHING they came into your dealership to buy something ,they are tired of looking and its up to you to close that deal .Good luck its a good game to get in but try and do an intership somewhere and see if its what you like doing…not everyone is cut out for sales and commision only in today’s market place.

Q: Becoming a car salesman?
Ok. So I have really thinking seriously about going into selling cars. I know so much about trucks and SUV’s and know enough about cars. One of my family members who passed away this year was a salesman at a RV resort selling memberships and make about $125000 a year off it. I know that them are two totally different jobs but he loved selling things. I really like money and am not afraid to put myslef out on a line. So if someone could give me some info on 1) how I would talk to the manager/boss when applying. 2) how much money I would make (would like to go into selling chevrolet). 3) any other info I should need. Thank you! Best answer gets 10 points :D

A: It’s nice to hear that someone is thinking about entering the field of car sales with all the bad press they have had in the media lately. You have heard correctly, you can make a nice six figure income selling cars, but not everyone can cut the mustard. However those that can make very good money.

Chevrolet is a great line to sell especially since they have been making a great comeback since their financial problems. They offer a full line of automobiles which allows you to sell to more customers.

When talking to a sales manager about becoming a car salesman they are looking for enthusiasm and the drive to make money. The more you sell the more the sales manger makes so they want you to make a bundle selling cars.

Attitude is huge when it comes to selling cars. If you can keep a positive attitude and follow the training they will provide you can sell cars.

Good Luck
