Q: Will Dodge dealers Kill the Challenger the way the Ford dealers killed the Last Ford Thunderbird?
Rumor has it that the Chrysler Dodge Dealers are going to demand $5000.00 over the sticker for the new Challengers. I remember when the last Thunderbirds came out and I went to numerous Ford dealers and they wanted way, way more than the sticker. So I talked to other potential Buyers and the consensus was, “They’re not building cars for us they don’t want us to hve them, they are bldg. them for rich people. Well You see what happened to the t-Bird and look where Ford is now!

A: I think that the people who can afford it and want one badly enough to get one of the limited edition 2008 model (there are only 6400 for the U.S. and part of an 800 car series for Canada) that they will easily pay at least $5000 over sticker, and probably even more that $10000 over sticker just to get a car with a limited edition dash plaque. AT LEAST!!! Once the 2009s come out though, and they aren’t limited edition any more, i think that they’ll sell like any other car with normal mark-up, as there will be more of them than the 2008s, and they do not have limited edition dash-plaques.

Q: Why should people even care what the car of the year is?
I’ve been in the automotive trade for years as a mechanical/electrical tech and auto body tech. I find it hilarious that people even take note of what model car wins the Motor Trend Car of the Year. Hilarius because of Motor Trend has a bad track record of picking cars that fail mechanically faster and more often than many other models offered that year. I think all cars of the year should be a car that has been in production for 3 years with minimal changes over the three years, and picked based on mechanical track records as being reliable and well… strong and sturdy. The list below from 1980 on up to this year is mostly filled with cars that are now considered junk cars solely by their track record of early failures mechanically. I mean look at the list, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Caravan, Taurus, Renault Alliance,Chrysler K Cars,Chevrolet Citation, Volkswagen GTI ALL cars with very bad reputations now. Car of the year award seems to be based on radical ideas, styling, toys and features, all nice and all but what about it actually doing what people should expect from the “Car of the Year” and that’s not breaking down and costing lots of money just to keep it running.

The Caprice was a short lived police car. Police forces experienced very weak suspensions with the Caprice. They has total and scary failures where the suspension dropped all the way and the wheels locked up in the wells. The Transmissions did not last nearly as long as the ol 727’s in the Dodge’s. If you think back the Caprices reign as the most used in the nations police force was short lived. The Crown Vic was the next to reign king and they still do today. Right now Dodge is trying to get a name for themselves in the Police car market but I am betting on that they will not live up to the expectations the police have for them. The next probable King of the police car is the Ford Taurus based ones that also come in a SUV form. Check out Jay Lenos Garage he just did a video on these new up coming models from Ford.

A: While I would agree with your idea of “junk” (falling apart rapidly) A) I don’t think it’s that consistent (why the ‘91 Caprice? Most popular police car in history!) and B) many of those cars listed were the bread and butter of the company making them. I mean look at the K car…it SAVED Chrysler.

Of course, making cars that sell tons but turn American consumers against them based on quality is not really a winning strategy, but hey, they did sell a ton of many of those vehicles.

Edit: going to disagree. The transmission GM used in the caprice is still being used in variant form today, was used in trucks, so it’s not weak. The suspension was the same design used from the 70’s, and there was no systemic failures.

Ford took over the market ONLY because GM discontinued the Caprice and hoped to foist FWD and SUV’s off to police agencies instead, and it backfired. Ford took the market and hasn’t had to look back since GM hasn’t had a serious RWD competitor yet. The Caprice was faster than the Ford to boot.

Q: Which cars of the past should be put back into production?
Recently automakers have been building retro cars like the VW Beetle, Dodge Challenger, PT Cruiser, Mustang, Chrysler 300, Fiat 500, Ford Thunderbird and Mini.
Additionally there are fiberglass replicas of prewar cars like the Model T, Model A, 41 Ford, and later cars like the 49 Mercury or 57 Chevy

The strict definition only includes intermediate size vehicles. In reality, performance oriented intermediate size vehicles didn’t appear until 1964. Before then, manufacturers took existing fullsize vehicles and added extra performance to them. Because of this, the early fullsize performance vehicles are generally considered muscle cars.

A: Well my favorite description of a Muscle Car is a fast car that a young person can afford! That’s why they made all of those cars, Mustangs, Chevelles,Cudas, etc. Back in the day a young person in the early 20’s could not afford a Corvette. Same thing today. The Mustang would be a modern muscle car. Id say under 30 grand. Some other cars with some potential would be a WRX, Evo (are they under 30?) SRT4 stopped ma-ken them though Fbody stopped them. Though I guess for under 30 grand you couldn’t get a modern GTO! Which is faster handles better, with even better mileage then the original. Its somthing to think about at least.

A: The legendary Toyota Supra!!! Twin turbocharged 3.0L engine. I’d say it had some “umph”! Also the RX7 and Mitsubishi 3000gt. Theres lots of cars out there! too many to list!!!

A: I wasn’t aware of this, but actually Toyota and Honda have Labor Unions.. in Japan! It is only in their American plants that they try to prevent organized labor.

Q: Which car should I buy in the Cash for Clunkers program to get the most money?
I have a 1989 Ford Thunderbird I want to use for this program. Which make and model should I consider purchasing to get the biggest voucher amount? I am interested in a minivan or something that seats at least 7 or 8 passengers, but I am interested in finding out all my options. If I can get a bigger voucher amount for a truck or a small passenger car, then I’ll consider it. I’ve read the Chrysler is matching the CFC program and if I plan correctly, I can get up to $9,000. Is this correct?

A: First of all, did you check to make sure your car qualifies? You qualify only if its the supercharged model. Reg Thunderbird does not.

Secondly you must buy a car that gets at least 28MPG (combined) to get the $4500 voucher. At least 22MPG for $3500.

Toyota Prius gets 50MPG.
