4 wheel drive won’t engage
A: If it is a push-button or otherwise electrically engaged system, I would use a multimeter and check the integrity of the wires in the electrical part of the system. If they check out, I would then suspect whatever kind of solenoid is actuating the transfer case. If that functions, I would suspect the linkage, either external or internal, that moves the transfer case gears. Internal linkage would be difficult to troubleshoot, I would imagine. I suggest you buy a shop manual for your vehicle or take it to a dealer.
Q: Why won’t my 4 wheel drive engage on a 1990 Ford Ranger?
1990 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 5Spd auto locking hubs. When I push the button on the dash, the 4×4 indicator lites up and I can hear clicking noises from the module behind the drivers seat, but the front end won’t pull. If I then push the button for 4 low, the indicator flashes for a few seconds, then goes out. is this a problem with the electric motor on the transfer case, or is there something else wrong? I don’t think it could be the hubs, cause there have never been any strange noises from the front end itself. Everything worked great till I replaced the transmission.
A: well first problem i would check is the switch cause i have a chevy s10 zr2 and that went bad and i got a new one and it works like a charm second thing i would check thats an easy fix is the 4×4 fuse
Q: 1986 ford f150 4×4 won’t engage 4 wheel drive?
I use this truck around my property and one day I just noticed the 4 wheel drive wasn’t engaging. When I slide the shifter into 4 wheel I can hear something shift in the trans (manual) and it sounds like it is going into 4 wheel drive, the 4×4 light goes on in the dash but no power to the front wheels. Just looking for a place to start looking. Any help appreciated!
much appreciated captain, they are manual hubs.
A: The problem will have to be at the hubs. If you are not hearing a lot of grinding and klanking in the front then it is because your hubs are not locking in or maybe just one isn’t. In order for it to work at all they both have to lock. I would need a little more information if I was to pinpoint the exact problem. Are they manuel or automatic locking hubs? Are you allowing them time to lock in, like letting the truck roll forward or backward a few feet? Have they been worked on lately? You may just need to take them apart and clean and grease them (pack the hubs). I hope this helps and God bless.
Q: Why won’t my 4 wheel drive system engage on my 1989 jeep wrangler?
A light used to come on the dash telling me my 4×4 was engaged, but it doesn’t go on anymore and my jeep wont go into 4 wheel drive, PLEASE tell me some possible ways I can fix this, there’s no clunking or banking underneath and it shifts just fine, I dont hava clue why it won’t??? Any advise would be appreciated, thanks
A: The shifter knob runs down under the body to linkage. The linkage is on the driver’s side of the jeep hidden by the skid plate. it has a couple of small set screws that can come undone. If this happens you can move your shifter but it will not engage your transfer case.
Q: 1999 Ford F150 front tires won’t engage in 4 wheel drive?
When I manually put is 4×4 (stick) I can hear the solenoid click. It seems like it shifts into 4 wheel drive, but no deal.
Any ideas?
A: Your truck has a vaccum controlled solenoid on the topside of the front axel just to the passenger side of the diff housing, you can only see it from under the truck, it’ll be a little pot with two vaccum lines going to it and a small shroud around it. it’s a common issue. at the top,the lines come out pretty close to the firewall on the pass. side and go to 2 small solenoids mounted to the firewall, should be just under or beside your main battery fuse panel,( med. sized black plastic cover, should say battery fuse on it)(if I remember correctly I think the lines are grey and green) just between the battery and the motor. the most probable causes are that a line has become pinched, cracked disconnected or plugged either at the axel side or the firewall side or the solenoid on the axel is done. the solenoid on the axel is what engages the hubs, if it’s toast you have to buy a new one, if it’s a vaccum supply issue try unhooking both sides of the lines one at a time and try to blow through them if you cant it is plugged, clean it out, if you can blow through them, hook them back up and spray the lines with soapy water and start the truck listen for the hissing of a leak or bubbles, if this gives you a result you need to repair the leak or replace the line, if you find that either end is un hooked plug it back in, or you can take it to a knowledgable shop and have them fix it. hope this helps. usually the solenoid is about 100-200 bucks depending on where you have to get it and typically (depending on how good the mechanic is ) about 1.5 hrs to change it give or take depending on what has to be removed to get to it( skid plates etc). may take more if they have to chase a leak though. hope this helps, best o’ luck.
Q: ‘84 Toyota pickup 4 wheel drive won’t engage. Help?!?
I checked the fluid in the transfer case. I can not get the gears to change from 2W high. The shifter moves around with lots of play. It will not shift to any other gear. Any ideas on what I can do or what the problem might be? Thanks!
A: Sounds like the linkage is loose and sloppy. Tighten up the linkage and lube it up.
Q: F-150 won’t engage 4 wheel drive?
I have a 86′ (I think) Ford f-150 4×4 (4 wheel is manual) and recently noticed it wasn’t engaging into 4 wheel drive. I’ve chased the problem down to somewhere in the front because I can see the drive shaft going to the front is turning. I’ve inspected the hubs and they seem ok from what I can tell, greesey and the lock mechanism compresses. I’m know some about auto mechanical stuff but completely out of my element with 4 wheel drive components. Any suggestions on things to check, possible solutions? Any help greatly appreciated!
ok, followed up on the fluid suggestion. I took the bolt out of the upper filling port and stuck my finger in and bone dry as far as I could reach down. If the fluid is the culprit, doesn’t that mean damage in the front case? Do you happen to know what kind of fluid it takes?
A: If the front shaft is turning and you have your transfer case locked into 4 low or 4 high it should be working provided your hubs are fully locking in .
Q: Four Wheel drive won’t engage?
I drive a 95 Chevrolet 1500..Yesterday I went fishing and got stuck in the mud and when I tried to switch to 4-wheel drive, I couldn’t get the lever to move. From what I can see, nothing is jammed to stop it though. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

…Not to sound rude..
Of course I put it in neutral. I know how to operate the 4wheel drive. I take it out in the mud every weekend..

A: when you put it in the mud on a relatively often basis, did you clean the transfer case, drive lines, check for oil/water sand mix in transfer case oil, lube drive lines check for bent shifter rods or other broken parts under the truck, regular maintenance and pms in your case will reveal lots of info that you didnt know existed
Q: front wheel drive switch won’t engage front axel?
Inadvertenly shifted to 4hi from 2hi at 70 mph Auto trans swich style to engage 4 wheel. felt drag on vehicle quickly swiched back to 2hi no noise now or then is there a failsafe to gard against any major damage what should I be looking for?
A: If you didn’t hear any gears grinding, you didn’t do any “real” damage. And if you were going straight and not accelerating or decelerating it shouldn’t have done any damage.
I shift my Dodge Ram 2500 in and out at speeds up to 50 MPH with no damage, but it’s a manual stick engagement type.
Q: My 95 blazer is stuck in 4 wheel drive and won’t disengage?
I changed my front pads last night and took it for a test drive, there is snow on the ground so I put it into 4 wheel and heard a clunk and then heard gears trying to engage and then another loud clunck and now its in 4 wheel but it won’t get out of it. Is there anyway I can manuelly do this? I really don’t need the 4X4.
A: There is a servo under the battery that is run by vacuum, disconnect the line and it should disengage.
Q: I have a 1991 GMC K1500 the front diff wont engage 4 wheel drive?
The light in the shifter comes on and the actuator is working. Also if you take actuator out and push the plunger in it still won’t engage. i tried low lock and it will go for the rear but thats about it would appreciate any info on this matter thanks
A: So I take it you crawled under the car and tried to engage the transfer case manually when you took off the little electric shift motor. If your front driveshaft doesnt turn when you do that, you probly need to put ATF in the transfer case, replace the chain inside it, or replace the whole thing. If the front shaft does turn, your locking hubs likely need greased or replaced, especially if their the automatic kind.
Q: 1989 k1500 4 wheel drive won’t kick in?
The transfer case engages but the front tires don’t. How do you check the solenoid in the front axle because they are pretty expensive and I don’t want to just go buy one. It makes a whinning noise when I have it locked in four wheel drive. What else could it be?
A: My ‘88 GMC had that problem years ago. I removed the TLA (thermo linear actuater) and replaced it with a manually operated pull cable device. Its called the 4×4 posi-lock and I bought it from Summit Racing.
The nice thing about this unit is it give me the option of disengaging the front diff in low range, giving me 2wd Low. Great for pulling a heavy boat out of the water, etc. Try it!
Q: Why won’t my 4 wheel drive work?
I have a 1994 suburban. It shifts into gear, and I can see the front driveshaft turning, but the cv joints don’t turn. Its like the front diff is in neutral. Something inside the front dif isn’t engaging. How do i fix this? It has 4 wires going to the front dif. Is it electrically engaged? I tested the lines, 12v goes there when I shift into 4×4, but nothing engages internally.
A: YES there’s an actuator in the front differential and if it doesn’t engage then it usually doesn’t let the”4-wheel drive” illuminate thats on the floor. The GMC techs refer to it as the “dildo” cause thats what it looks like and kinda acts like one by going in & out when it engages and disengages.
Q: 1993 suburban, 4 wheel drive is not working. Is it electronic? Did I blow a fuse somewhere?
The 4 wheel drive will move from 2H to N to 4L and 4H, just won’t engage.
A: if the shifter will move on it ,look in the fuse panel there’s a fuse marked 4 wheel drive, those use an actuator to actually en-gage the front differential unit, and if it blows it wont do nothing,id say the actuator may be bad or the fuse is blown for it,and a bad actuator will blow the fuse,so if you replace the fuse for it and put it in 4 wheel and it stops working ,just replace the actuator,if that one is original its about time it went out, they cost around 70 bucks usually at a parts store for these, and they look like a giant 0-2 sensor that mounts right in the front differential unit, and their real easy to replace good luck with it.
Q: 4 Wheel Drive F-150 Problem Engaging?
I put the truck in 4 wheel low drive for a minute and then when I turned the switch to normal 2 wheel drive, it won’t go back into normal mode of driving. Seems like it’s stuck in 4 Wheel Low Drive. I don’t know what to do. I tried stopping and restarting the vehicle but seems it wants to stay in Low gear. Please Help
A: Is it an automatic? Did you put it in neutral to disengage? Yea try backing up. If that don’t work, try jacking the front end off the ground. If there is tension on the transfer case, this will release it.
