Q: Error 161 and 163 appear on the screen of my thinkpad 380Z. Is the motherboard busted?
I cannot use my laptop because of these errors. Honestly, I don’t have any knowledge in fixing a computer. I hope that someone in there could help me about it. Base on the manual it is either the non-rechargeable battery or the motherboard that is busted, I want to know since two errors appear at the same time if the motherboard is likely the problem.
A: Error 161 is a dead CMOS battery. You need a new one.
Error 163 is the time not being set in the BIOS. It’s a side effect of error 161.
Check the link below for replacement instructions.
It’s under “Backup battery checkout (non-rechargeable)”

Why would it not work?
A: No.
Q: how do you dump an IBM thinkpad 380z?
A: Do it very gently. Thinkpads…the 380z in particular…are very sensitive. Why do you want to dump it? Was it cheating on you? Just be careful because we all know it’s going to give you the “I’ll change, I love you” line. Don’t fall for it.
Q: How can I find out how long my warranty lasts for my laptop?
I have a 1998 IBM 380Z laptop and I was wondering if the warranty stills lasts on it.
A: Are you kidding? Warranty only lasts for 1 year unless you paid for extended warranty for another year or two. Yours is 12 years old! There are no parts for that model anymore even if you think it is still under warranty.

Would it just be the risk of electric shocks? Because iam willing to take that risk =p
A: Theoretically, yes. Practically, I wouldn’t want to be the one finding out.
Laptop screens are very finicky bits of hardware, and are dangerous if not handled properly. If you don’t know what you’re doing, then I would advise you not to try it.
Q: Can you put a hard drive into an IBM thinkpad laptop from a gateway solo laptop?
I have a really old IBM thinkpad 380z as well as a really old Gateway solo (both had windows 98 on them) I was wondering if it would be possible to transfer the hard drive from the gateway to the IBM.
A: open it up and look at what type of harddrive it is!
silly goose =)

my battery for my thinkpad 380z run for about 5 mins and i need to find a program to keep it running longer,
specs: 233 p2 prosscer, 32 mb ram, 2 mb video mem
A: You cannot “fix” a battery (hardware) with any kind of program (software).
Sorry.

233 mhz
32 mb ram
3 GB HD
2 mb non-accelerated
o.k. sound card
(i have a thnkpad 380z)

Look at games by PopCap.
You’re not going to be able to pull much with that machine. =/
Q: Which is better, 2000 or XP for this computer?
So I’ve got this old IBM Thinkpad 380Z with Windows XP and it has the internet and that and that’s kinda what matters most to me, the internet… and yes it’s really slow, about 223 Mhz, a 7 GB hard drive, and 64 MB of memory, and right now it’s running Windows XP Professional. For a laptop like that, which would be better, keeping the Windows XP, or going with Windows 2000? Whichever I still do have the wireless drivers for both OS’s, so which would the laptop be better off with.
By the way, I’m not using that laptop to send this, i’ve got more than 1 computer
Toshiba Satellite A135-S4656… the laptop I’m using right now with upgraded memory
A: Both OS’s require a mimimum of 64MB of RAM, however they both recommend using at least 128 MB, an XP install by itself can use up around 4 GB of HDD space and Win2K uses under 1 GB of space, Win2K is slightly less system intensive but not very much, while XP is more compatible with todays applications.
it’s a good idea to reserve least 20% of the free space on the HDD for virtual memory, cache, etc and XP would be pushing pretty close to that with a 7GB HDD
according to my research the 380Z supports a max of 96 MB of RAM
and that the 380Z has 32MB of RAM built-in, which is nonremovable, meaning that if you wish to upgrade the RAM, you’ll have to remove the 32MB module you have now and add a 64MB module.
a 64 MB module for your laptop runs about $20, if I were you I’d upgrade the RAM and install Windows 2000, or at the very least stay away from XP with your current configuration.

Q: Old IBM laptop screen broken?
Hi. My brother has an IBM Laptop ThinkPad 380Z Type 2635. Something’s wrong with the screen. When it’s opened all the way all it shows is these colored lines but when it’s like a fourth closed it shows it’s normal windows xp screen. How do I open the screen and fix it? There are no screws or anything. I tried opening the laptop. When it’s open, the keyboard comes up and all of the hardware is right there. I looked in there but there’s no thick wire or anything that is for the screen. How can I fix it, where can I fix it, and what do I have to do to fix it?
A: Actually, the cable that leads to the screen is usually a thin ribbon cable. It will come down through a black flexible sleeve between the screen and the keyboard.
This is a link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual from IBM.
This has the location of each component and the order to remove various parts (FRU = Field Replaceable Unit … AKA Part.)
You want to look at the Symptom to FRU index and the FRU Removal section. It will tell you what to take off first.
I’m willing to say that the cable is probably bad or possibly just loose. You’ll be able to tell pretty quickly.
You’ll also be able to find the part (FRU) number on the cable. Use the FRU number not the part number when you search.
Good luck.
Q: Windows 98se laptop?
ok here’s what i have.
4GB HDD
233MHZ
32MB
2.5MB video
Surprisingly i made this look like a windows vista like laptop with.
-Uberskin
-Desktop Sidebar
-KernelEX
-Vista Drive Icons
-and much more..
i have 3.78 GB left to find a primary function for this and by primary funtion i mean.
-Music
-Games
-Videos (NO!!!)
-Other….(What can you think up)
Please People I need Good answers.
(Thinkpad 380z Type 2635 HGU)
A: If you used it for games, you’d have to get older games that are supported by Windows 98. Newer games tend to use up a lot of disk space, and 3.78 GB won’t go too far. If you wanted to use it for office functions and you wanted to install Microsoft Office it would have to be Office 2000 or older, or you could install Open Office 2.0. If you wanted to use it for internet access, you could install Firefox 2.0 or older, I don’t believe that Firefox 3.0 has support for Windows 98, Internet Explorer 6 will work on Windows 98, Internet Explorer 7 will not. IE 6 is stll available from Microsoft.
